Are websites programmed, coded or written? Opinions differ but we tend to regard it as "writing". Websites are written in HTML, which is an abbreviation for Hyper Text Markup Language. XHTML is eXtensible HTML, the most recent version of HTML, which we have used on this site.
We do not intend to teach you how to write HTML - there are other resources for that. Instead, we will concentrate on the following:
Remember that we said "Content is King"? A website without any real content is not going to attract visitors, let alone keep them coming back. Such a site could be compared to an empty shop. Why would you shop there?
How do we go about writing our website? What equipment do we need? Do we need to learn how to produce the special code used for web pages or is there software we can use? We examine a range of options.
Learning HTML is not essential for you to build a website, but basic knowledge can come in very handy when things don't quite work the way you meant them to. So we will show you some resources where you can learn HTML and other scripting languages such as Javascript, VB Script, perl and PHP.
If you want your site to be found in search engines and directories, take that into account when you write/program the website. If some basic rules are followed, the resulting listing could attract a lot of visitors.
